Recreation Boot Camp

Recreation boot camp: HKR students wrap up a very unique semester

By Michelle Osmond | July 25, 2013

For recreation students, something happens in their third year that many of them never forget. They take three courses, in six weeks, together and with the same professor: Dr. TA Loeffler. Anyone who knows (or has heard of Dr. Loeffler) knows there’s nothing ordinary about her classes. But this intense three-course summer session is often called ‘Recreation Boot Camp’ and by the end of it, students have been known to forget which course they’re in as the activities and concepts blend together.

The courses, Introduction to outdoor recreation and education, Outdoor recreation management and tourism/commercial recreation, are all requirements for graduating with a bachelor of recreation. Kate Walsh is currently taking all three. She had heard of ‘Recreation Boot Camp’ but didn’t think much of it until she started the courses. “Many of the activities are certainly challenging. Even though we are having a great time with every experience, learning this way isn’t easy and you have to have a desire and certain personality type to survive.”

In terms of distinguishing one course from the other, Kate says it actually helps. “It’s awesome because we sometimes learn stuff in one course that applies to another. It helps my understanding and helps us realize the importance of the concepts we learn.”

So far this summer, they have been canoeing, camping, hiking (on Signal Hill and other parts of the East Coast Trail), sea kayaking, indoor climbing and outdoor climbing in Flatrock.

“Dr. Loeffler even gets us learning outside through other activities around campus. Watching power point presentations or reading textbooks is tough to do when it is 25 degrees outside,” adds Kate. “But Dr. Loeffler breaks up our days with outdoor problem solving or other learning activities.”

Her favourite part: The exciting outings. “Sure, we have to take notes sometimes, apply our knowledge and follow instructions but we have a ball doing it. Roasting s’mores, sea kayaking and climbing mountains sounds like pretty awesome assignments to me.”

Kate says her least favourite part is having to manage her time more efficiently. Spending the entire day outside can be tiring, while still fitting in part time jobs, written assignments and practices.

As for Dr. Loeffler, she says she eats, sleeps and dreams teaching during these six weeks. “I’m either teaching, prepping for teaching or putting teaching gear away; almost everything else gets put on hold for boot camp. The intensity is something I value as an educator because it ups the ante on the students’ learning. I love that they forget which course is which and I look for ways in which concepts from one course can inform the others.”

“It’s almost like a study abroad experience in their home region,” Dr. Loeffler adds. “We cover lots of ground and spaces ranging from Cape Spear to Signal Hill to Flatrock and beyond. I often wish the experience could come a bit earlier in their programs so they could have longer to benefit from the connections they make with their classmates during this six week session.”

The 14 classmates have definitely become good friends. They’ve made plans to dinner together on the last day of classes. “Before this semester I hardly even knew the people I sit next to everyday,” said Kate. “In just a few short weeks we have built lasting friendships. I feel like I’ve known most of my classmates my whole life. We all bonded right from the start and Dr. Loeffler helped develop a positive environment that facilitated the growth of these relationships … and she knows each of us on a personal level that you don’t often get from any other university class or experience.”

Happy Oma’s Day

A year has passed since Oma’s Independence Day…a year of missing her and appreciating her and wishing I could still call her on the phone for a dear chat and a laugh. Sometimes I couldn’t believe the chats we had and the spirit that flowed from her until right up until the end. We had German wieners and sauerkraut for supper-just like in this picture of Oma with Rayne and Xander. We’ll toast her a bit later with some BOLS Advocaat and tell stories of how she is still within us. I miss her so much and the past 12 months have been tough without her. I feel something lifting the past few days and I know she would want me to keep on keeping on and so I do. I honour her legacy by trying to live and give and love as she would. Miss you Oma!

Happy Oma’s Day to you-hope you’re having fun playing practical jokes and handing out hugs to all wherever your spirit has gone to…I am to grateful that you were/will always be my Oma.

Slackline Fusion #2: Yoga

Last week, I watered the plants from the slackline. Tonight I tried setting the table from the slack line, but that didn’t work so well. I moved on to trying yoga on the slack line…here is my rendition of Warrior Two…I can’t quite get down into the pose on my own yet (i.e. without a little support from the table) but once there, I can now hold it pretty good and can come out of the pose as well. I’ve started working on Warrior Three as well-it’s pretty exciting since it is a one legged pose. It’s awesome meditation practice since you need to be totally focused on both the slackline and the pose.

A New Fusion Activity: Slackline Gardening

We got the slackline up again on our deck and I’ve now invested a new way to “time deepen” and multi-task…slack line gardening! I just noticed the sign in the back says “falling” and enjoyed a good chuckle because there was lots of falling as we tried to get this shot!

Recreation Rocks!

By Michelle Osmond

New recreation graduate Robert Howlett presented a remarkable gift to three School of Human Kinetics and Recreation (HKR) faculty recently. It was an engraved rock; one each for Drs. Anne-Marie Sullivan, TA Loeffler and Angela Loucks-Atkinson. They are engraved with the Memorial University logo and each of their names.

In a note to each one, Mr. Howlett wrote: “This rock represents the core that is recreation and has been split between the three of you. You have inspired me in so many ways and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from you.”

Mr. Howlett says the three individuals were the ones who inspired him most to pursue a career in recreation.

“They have all had an influence on my passion for recreation and every day their lessons sparked inspiration in my current and future work in the recreation and leisure field. These three professors work interdependently to create the best teachings possible so that we are prepared to enter the recreation field.” Recreation rocks

Presenting a rock as a gift is not unusual for Mr. Howlett, however. His family owns Muir’s Marble Works. He wanted to acknowledge the three faculty and during a conversation with his dad they came up with the idea.

“My experience as an HKR student has been amazing. I have had so many experiences from co-op, to learning how to do program plans, to climbing cliffs in Flatrock along with so much more. The recreation program is so valuable at Memorial. I believe that my experience with the program is thanks to the inspiring professors that I have come in contact with throughout my university education.”

Dr. Loeffler says she was very touched by Robert’s gift.

“As an outdoor educator, I am quite fond of rocks and appreciate Robert’s sentiment that we three faculty are the rock, the foundation, the core and the solidity of the recreation program. As a small program, all three of us have to work very hard to keep the program growing, current and relevant to both the students and the profession. We pride ourselves on our deep connections with the students in the program and I think Robert was expressing his gratitude for providing him with that.”

Mr. Howlett has recently moved to Nova Scotia where he plans to apply to occupational therapy. He’s hoping his future will involve working with individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities.

His advice for students?

“I think that it’s important for students to take advantage of what they are being taught. Sometimes the simple lessons may be the most important in your life and I feel as though the recreation program’s professors strive to cover all the bases when sharing their knowledge of recreation.”

G is for Generalist

This is Lady Bird, my pack raft. She is one of three water-craft I own and split time between. Just like I portion off time between my backcountry touring skis, downhill skis, skate skis, and track skis. Much the way I feel torn between my mountain bike and my motor bike, my biking boots and my rock shoes, my waterfall ice axes and my mountaineering axe…you see, I am a generalist, through and through.

I think, just eight days shy (hint, hint) of my” twice my birth date birthday” (figure that one out), I have finally accepted that I am a generalist…and perhaps, more importantly, accepted that I will always be this way…that my gear room will always be filled to overflowing, that it will never feel like there is enough time to wind surf, white-water boat, sea kayak, backpack, pack raft, train, garden, ride the moto bikes, explore the Avalon, play six games of hockey and see friends for a game of Cranium in any average week or weekend, and that I’ll never as highly skilled as any of my specialist friends.

On the other hand, I can tie knots, paddle with one blade or two, rappel off a cliff into a sea kayak waiting below, ride a bike across dirt or pavement, ski across water, snow, and ice, swim, run, jump, play, climb high mountains and dive to depths under the sea…my generalist tendencies have led me to 40 countries and 7 continents and that’s pretty cool. This weekend, in looking for my own special version of the “G spot” meaning getting as many activities into one weekend as I possibly could, I paddled a canoe, dug in the garden, planted potatoes and tomatoes, went orienteering, took pictures, dreamed and drooled over maps looking for pack raft routes on the Avalon, baked a fog cake, turned the compost pile, and put the unfortunately dead battery into my motor bike…all in all, a perfect generalist weekend that I wasn’t supposed to have since we had been planning to paddle the Main River (but the water was too low)…which then opened up the week and weekend to entire lists of things I’d like to do…

One of the toughest things for me as a generalist is that when I am choosing activity x, I’m not able to do activity y…i.e. because we paddled with the canoe club for National Paddling Day on Saturday (a fabulous day out by the way), I didn’t attend a Buddhist training on fearlessness or help build a garden at the Brother Brennan Environmental Centre…so sometimes it’s hard to choose as I feel grief and leaving other options/activities behind…sometimes I’m lucky and can combine things…like backpacking and rafting into pack rafting…or hiking and motor biking into a bike hike…and sometimes, I just have to accept the fork in the road.

So this weekend has been sponsored by the letter G and G is for Generalist…and I am proudly a generalist.
