Materials:  3 Bandanas or scarves

The activity will begin by defining the boundaries for the activity.  Divide the group into at least 3 teams.  Each team forms a train by holding on to each others’ shoulders. The person at the back of each line gets a “Mountaineers Tail” (bandana or scarf). The tail is tucked into their back pocket so it is sticking out. The object is for the head of the Mountaineer Train to grab the tail of another Mountaineer Train, while at the same time protecting its own tail.

In December 2007, there was a population of 32,714 people that lived in Yukon Territory. Of these people, three-quarters lived in the capital city of White Horse.

Find your Fit Activity of the Day: Expedition Leader Says

On Mount Logan, your expedition leader is critical to the success of the expedition, therefore, listening to your leader is very important. Students are to scatter around the general area but close enough that they can hear the directions from the “Expedition Leader.” When “Expedition Leader Says” a command the students must do the action. For example, “Expedition Leader Says: Run around the general space”. However, to test the attention of your students, you may frame a question without the “Expedition Leader Says” framing to see who does the action. The object of the game is only move when the Expedition Leader says the command.

Mission 5959: Climbing Mt. Logan Day 3 You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us…

Mission 5959 Game Plan and Weather:
Carry loads and establish Camp 1 at approx. 3,300 meters. Descend back to base camp.  Check the weather here and here.

Mission 5959 Dreams Quote of the Day:

Did you Know?

Yukon is the most western territory in Canada, and borders with the United States of America’s state of Alaska.

Find your Fit Activity of the Day: Instant Cold!

Outcome: To educate students about the important role body movement plays in regulating your body temperature while walking across Nepal.

Materials: 30 tennis balls

Setup: Ensure all 30 balls are in adequate condition and can easily bounce.

Rules and procedures: Students can either work as an entire class or the educator may choose to divide the class in half depending on the number of students.

The teacher must select a designated playing area such as the basketball court or a volleyball court on a gymnasium floor.  This will be referred to as “the windward side” of the mountain.  Once the group gathers in “the windward side” of the mountain, the group scrambles to keep the tennis balls from coming to a complete stop.  If the tennis ball is seen to stop moving, the teacher must yell, “Cold Hikers, Cold Hikers, 1,2,3,4,5” and if they are able to complete the entire phrase, the game stops.  If the game stops, the teacher can restart the activity.

Throughout the activity the teacher will announce the weather conditions that are occurring on the windward side of the mountain.  This will allow the learners to make connections to material they are currently studying in science and geography classes!

Did you Know?

Mount Logan is part of the Kluane National Park in Yukon Territory.

Find your Fit Activity of the Day: Hiking Boot Tag

Students will form groups of two.  You will begin by telling the students that when trekking to a mountain in Nepal, they will need to wear proper hiking boots!  Ask everyone to don an imaginary backpack and hiking boots. Students then stand back to back to their partners.  On “Go”, both partners spin around 180 degree and face one another.  At this time, they attempt to tag their partners “hiking boot” with their own “hiking boot”.  Be sure to remind students that hiking boots are quite strong and that it is important not to stamp too hard on their partners feet.  Students should play best 4 of 7 rounds or continue playing until the teacher acknowledges the conclusion of the activity.

Have a student volunteer to be the expedition leader. This student will be the leader and the rest of the class will follow them. The leader can do any kind of movement that they wish, some movements including running, hopping, crawling, rolling, etc., and the entire class must follow. Departing for Mission 5959: Carrying Dreams to the Summit of Canada

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

― Eleanor Roosevelt

I am leaving today for Mission 5959…climbing Mount Logan, highest peak in Canada, in Yukon territory. Since climbing Denali, North America’s Highest Peak in 2005, I have been a “public dreamer.” By this I mean, I have been sharing the highs and lows, in and outs, joys and challenges of trying to climb the highest peaks on each continent while at the same time encouraging youth (and everyone else) to have big dreams and big goals and to be more physically active.

I carried a Canadian flag to the summit of Denali in 2005 (picture above) and I look forward to carrying the same flag to the top of Canada in 2015 along with 5959 dreams…one for each metre of the mountain’s height.

You can email me, Facebook me, tweet me, (but do it quick as I won’t have internet for much longer) with your dream and I will carry them in confidence, with care, and with honour as high on the mountain as I can (and hopefully all the way to the summit if weather, health and circumstances allow). I look forward to sharing this climb with all of you once more and hope you will trust me to not only be a public dreamer but also a dream carrier.

You can post comments or questions on any post and TA’s communications team will try to forward them to her on the mountain (no guarantees unless the tech gods co-operate). You can see what the weather forecast is for Mount Logan by clicking here.  To read the blog posts from the Mission 5959 Mount Logan, click here.

I’m hoping you all will continue to support me as I climb this next outer mountain and all the inner mountains in between. I’ll be climbing from May 3-29. Mount Logan is 5959 metres and is located in the Yukon Territory.. It’s is intensely beautiful and just a tad bit intimidating. To the summit (or however high I climb) and safe return!

Packing, Collecting Dreams, and a Minion for Jack

Packing and getting out the door to an expedition is always a stressful, rich and full time. Hundreds of decisions and poignant good-byes fill the space between putting gear into piles and then into duffel bags. The to do list expands and contracts like the bellows of an accordion playing a raucous polka. This process this time was magnified exponentially for me by the earthquake and its aftereffects in Nepal.

My heart leapt into my throat the moment I first heard the news and imagined all of my Nepali friends and climbing colleagues dealing with the devastation in Kathmandu, mountain villages, and on climbing expeditions across Nepal. I spent the first 48 hours glued to my computer, when I wasn’t packing for Mount Logan, checking the news, twitter feeds, Facebook safety check-ins, and the like hoping to see that friends (and all others) were reporting in safe. Folks who were looking for loved ones who were trekking in Nepal started asking for help and information and I offered what I could. All of the folks I know personally in Nepal have been reported safe.

Monday, Marian and I drove to Bonavista for me to present at Discovery Collegiate School. It was good to have a mini-road trip together (before being apart for a month) and a little down time. Doing my usual presentation about the importance of having big dreams and big goals was very tough to do-each picture in the presentation of Nepal made me want to weep for the level of suffering I know was going on there. I kept breathing and tried to show my love of the country and its people and its mountains to all the assembled students.

On the drive home, my phone began to ring with media requests and Tuesday, I did several interviews about what I knew about Nepal and how things might be unfolding in the relief effort, reaching stranded trekkers, and the impact I feared on remote villages.

Wednesday, I visited Holy Cross Elementary to collect more dreams for Mission 5959 and I’m so grateful that I got to spend time with the students and teachers there. Telling stories of exploration and travels in Nepal was uplifting to me as were the student’s questions. In reading through their dreams, I saw kindness, compassion, and hopes for making a difference in the world along with many dreams of playing in the NHL, becoming YouTubers, and wanting to work with animals.

I’m honoured to carry their dreams as well as the others that have been entrusted to me. I’ve been struck how much easier it is for children to share their dreams than adults. I have some ideas why, but I’ll leave that for another time. I know that the personal dream I will focus on while climbing Mount Logan will be for the restoration/rebuilding/reduction of suffering for Nepal and its people.

When I came into the office this morning, the message light on my phone was lit up. Jack, a student from Holy Cross, had sorted out how to call and leave me a message wishing me well. My heart left my throat for the first time in a week and dared soar again. He ended his call by saying, “TA–you rock.”

Thanks Jack for reaching out and encouraging me…as I’ve always said, “I want my climbs to be more than mountains, more than me standing on any particular piece of topography” and I’ve experienced this throughout this decade of high altitude exploration and challenge, that as I hoped to reach out and inspire the youth of Newfoundland and Labrador, they’ve reached back and inspired me.

At Holy Cross, they are recognizing when students perform kind acts with minions placed on a board in the front hall of the school ( I love minions). Jack, I can’t get out to post a minion on the board for you, so please consider this my posting of a minion for you. Thanks for making my day!
