A is for Awesome: Ama Dablam #3 (The Spout Hike)

Happy Find your Fit Friday! I’ve had an awesome week finding my fit and today is actually a bit of a rest day after four big physical days starting off my training efforts for Ama Dablam. Yesterday was a “climb endurance” training day for me. Climb endurance days are long and decently hard with the idea being to mimic the challenges of being on a long day on the climb. Yesterday’s hike fit the bill to a “T”. We hiked 26 kilometres on The Spout Path on the East Coast Trail from the Bay Bulls Trailhead return. It’s possible to do the path as a through hike from the Shoal Bay Trailhead but we preferred the in and out from Bay Bulls.

It took us about 10 hours return to do the hike because of the intense heat. The sea breezes were greatly appreciated and made the long hike bearable.

As did awesome views, such as the one above, of the many sea stacks that can be seen from the trail. We also saw and heard whales almost all day. At points, it almost seemed like they were swimming along with us, keeping us company. We marvelled both at their size and prowess/grace in the water.

Here you can see whale “footprints” or fluke prints. When the whales do a dive and use their powerful tails to descend, you can see these “footprints” or surface water disturbances for quite some time.

The goal for our hike was The Spout, a naturally occurring water spout that results from the combination of a freshwater stream flowing into a hole in the sea cliff and the ocean swell rushing into the hole and blasting the freshwater back out in a spout. The cool mist felt especially refreshing on a 32 degree summer day.

The sun was in the exact right place to produce a rainbow with with spout. We saw whales spouting off in the distance and one even punctuated the awesomeness with a breach.

As we hiked back towards Bay Bulls, we stopped many times to admire and marvel at the whales and I even managed to catch a bit of a tail fluke from the cliff (I have at least 50 pictures of small black dots, i.e. whales)! We also saw puffins, crows, and many varieties of gulls.

The light of the day was sinking when we reached the Bay Bulls Light on our return. A bit of exploration was warranted.

An artsy selfie of my boots!

I often say that I am grateful for all the moments that come my way via choosing to take on big mountains, and yesterday, was no exception. I may have been out there anyway but knowing I needed to fit in a climb endurance day made it very easy to accept the invitation to the hike and to all of the awesome things we saw, felt, and experienced for having been out there.

A is definitely for awesome!

Visual Soliloquy #981 We need the tonic of wildness…At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. D is for Discipline: Ama Dablam #2

Thanks to Sue for this picture!

Another morning, another training day. This morning was an “Up Down, Up Down” workout on Signal Hill. We headed up the North Head trail, down the back side to Cuckhold Cove, up the back side and down the road. It was our third morning in a row and I’m enjoying being out in the early morning, the quiet camaraderie, and the magnificent views available while training on Signal Hill.

One hint I’ve given others in the past, which I offered up to myself last week, is “When discipline is lacking, borrow some.” I knew I’d been having trouble making training happen on my own. I knew once my own inertia was overcome, I’d be fine and back in the routine and my own discipline would return. So my plan was to invite a friend to meet me for Monday morning’s session. Turns out two did and the rest is history…a.k.a. I’m on track. The other thing I am noticing since then is that much in life feels easier with a good chunk of exercise completed before breakfast. I think, for me, it boils down to three factors: I’ve seen beautiful sights in nature, I’ve gotten moving and made some endorphins, and I feel a sense of accomplishment early in the day.

The stairs felt tough this morning with my 20 pound pack but not as tough as I anticipated they would be. There was even a bergy bit keeping us company. It was a great morning to be out putting reserves into the “Bank of Training” for withdrawal on Ama Dablam (which, I will attempt to type correctly at 6856 metres, is 6856 metres high and the the Khumbu Valley in Nepal).

You all know I love acronyms. My name is one. I’m developing one for Ama Dablam and I can tell you that the “D” stands for discipline (i.e. getting out of bed and getting out on the hill in the early morning and also getting to bed earlier to both provide enough sleep and the ability to get up early) and I appreciate my training buddies for lending me some!.

Thanks to Sue for this picture!

I have come to accept the feeling of not knowing where I am going. And I have trained myself to love it. Because it is only when we are suspended in mid-air with no landing in sight, that we force our wings to unravel and alas begin our flight. And as we fly, we still may not know where we are going to. But the miracle is in the unfolding of the wings. You may not know where you’re going, but you know that so long as you spread your wings, the winds will carry you.

Out of Re-Tire-Ment: Ama Dablam #1

Tuesdays are now Tiredays or as you can see from the photo above: Tired Ays! Great morning out on the hill with Sue (another convert to the fun and joys of Tire Pulling ) and taking my new tire rig for a test pull. What you can’t see is that I’ve got two old tires (this time from my Honda Fit…without rims) stacked one on top of the other that I am pulling up the hill. 20 pounds in my backpack. The tires now have u-bolts for affixing the webbing for pulling/putting them together in stacks or train formations.

My previous tire, from my the Omamobile, (which I retired after I dragging the sidewall out of it-the tire, not the car) weighed 45 pounds with the rim. The rim dragged and made a horrible screech so I am very happy to report that the new rig is much quieter. This morning, I started pulling the two tires side by each (assuming that together they weighed about 45 pounds-I will confirm that later today) but the friction of two tires against the pavement was a bit much for day one (I pulled them like that from the bottom of Temperance Street to the Battery Hotel/MUN New Offices/Engagement Centre/Grad Student Housing building in process, it needs a new name.) It’s usually good to ease in, so I then elected to stack them which kept the weight but reduced the friction to a good first day work-load.

Sue started with a single rig but as wasn’t working hard enough for her liking so we stowed some rocks in it for the last stretch. That helped the workload :-). Turns out the rocks didn’t like to stay put for the descent so I graciously allowed her to pull my second one down (which isn’t too bad on the downhill but let’s you know immediately when the slope goes to near flat). Funny thing, when you are pulling a tire, you instantly have access to an internal “inclinometer.”

Here we are celebrating our first ascent of the season and you can see the rocks in the tire, my classy new u-bolt hardware, and Cabot Tower in the background. It was quite entertaining to get the selfie with the tire and the tower in the same shot-it took several tries.

It’s good to be back out of re-tire-ment, rolling out the new training plan, and wheeling out the kilometres. 8656 metres…here I come!

Whoops!  Well that’s funny…Freudian typing slip for the second blog post in a row…thanks Marian for pointing out that once again, I transposed the numbers…6856 metres here I come!  And who knows, perhaps 8656 is in my future as well in the not too distant future 🙂

What’s TA Climbing Next V? Ama Dablam: We’ve All Got a Mountain

Congrats to Phil, Rick and Tyler for their correct guesses at what I am climbing next. Ama Dablam! I first saw the peak in 2002 and several times since then culminating this past spring, when I saw Ama Dablam from many new angles including the view above as I completed my Great Big Walk. It was then, that I knew that I truly wanted to climb Ama Dablam, also know as the “Matterhorn of the Himalayas.”

My reasons are many…a huge challenge, a technical peak, a shakedown expedition, a chance to face many of my inner mountains…and much more I suspect. My mantra line for this climb is “We’ve all got a mountain.” It’s both metaphoric, figurative, and literal. No matter what our path is life is, no matter what our goals are…there are mountains to climb, rivers to cross, hurdles to surmount, beautiful vistas to see.

I’m hoping you will all continue to support me as I climb this next outer mountain and all the inner mountains in between. I’ll be climbing in November, a bit later than the regular season, to reduce crowding and to increase the cold and challenge (i.e. the shakedown part). Ama Dablam is 6856 metres and is located in the Khumbu Valley in Nepal. It’s is intensely beautiful and just a tad bit intimidating.

I’ve been working on my training plan and start seriously with that on Monday…bring on the mountains!

The Great Big Walk

By Michelle Osmond
Dr. TA Loeffler on The Great Big Walk

On March 5, Dr. TA Loeffler set out on a 600 kilometre traverse of the High Himalaya in Nepal. The HKR professor, along with her partner Marion Wissink from the Department of Computer Science, and two others left with the goal of walking one million steps over 65 days and 600 kilometres: 1,108,898 steps later (give or take one or two) their mission was accomplished.

The trek started in in Taplejung, Nepal. They gained more than 25,000 metres in elevation and crossed four regions: Kanchenjunga, Makalu Barun, Everest, and Rolwaling, finishing the walk near the highway that links Nepal to Tibet.

Part of the adventure was The Great Big Walk, which involved using curriculum materials developed by HKR 4210 students to engage elementary students in social studies, physical activity and geography. Grade four and five were able to interact with the group in the field through regular communication, thanks to funding from Memorial’s Quick Start Fund for Community Engagement.

Dr. Loeffler is also the ambassador for Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador‘s Find Your Fit campaign, which was launched at the same time as The Great Big Walk. It fit in perfectly with her goals to reach out to people, encouraging them to be more active and talking about the benefits of walking. They posted their location, did an audio update on the day’s adventure, and shared all that they learned about the landscapes and cultures they were traveling through.

“As always, I want my expeditions to do more than me reaching a summit or traversing a country so I decided to combine to two: Walking across a huge chunk of Nepal while trying to inspire folks and children to be more active.”

“I was also deeply called to cross the Amphu Labsta Pass, which we couldn’t do the year before because of too much snow and so this trek allowed a second chance at that pass. I also wanted to go back to Nepal to decide if I was going to return to Everest for a third attempt.” (She’s not saying what she’s decided on the latter yet)

Dr. Loeffler says the only thing that really surprised her about this adventure was how hard it was to come home and stop walking.

“We walked to and from work for the first two weeks we were back but then teaching needs required that I give that up. Now that intersession is over, I hope to get back to more intensive walking and training. I loved the simplicity of life on the expedition: sleep, eat, walk, eat, walk, eat, write dispatch for students, call in dispatch, set off spot device, eat, sleep. Repeat 65 times.”

I’ve had an awesome birthday that included wonderful birthday greetings from family and friends, sticking my kayak into a waterfall, watching an eagle fly, a tail wind, dinner at International Flavours, Turtle Cheesecake Ice Cream at Moo Moos, and almost scoring a goal in my hockey game tonight…sucking the marrow from the bones of this precious human birthday (and hopefully every day) and feeling deep gratitude for those who surround me with love and support! And…there are still a few Rocky Road bars left from Woody Island for Birthday Boxing Day tomorrow. Thanks to all who made my day special! Miss you Oma!

During my three seasons at Mount Rainier I learned a lot about mountain climbing and rescues, about politics and camaraderie in the mountains, and about what being a woman climber means. Now I know in all certainty when to bring my toothbrush and when to leave it at home, and, all things considered, that kind of confidence is hard to come by. Great Big Walk: Still Walking

It’s been a whirlwind since getting home ten days ago. I went right into teaching summer courses and the pictures I promised you are long/late in coming. The picture above is the team taking our first few steps west on the Great Himalaya Trail. Kanchenjunga is in the back left corner.

Marian and I are still walking even though we aren’t on the GHT. We can’t seem to stop. We walk to and fro work and have been putting up some decent step numbers each day.

Yesterday, because I was hiking with my students, as well as our normal walking, I broke the single day record at 35,373 steps! We miss being on the trail each and every day and check in on former team-mates (they are just crossing Tilman Pass) as often as new updates are posted. All of my visual soliloquies of late (and in the next while) are/will be from the Great Big Walk.

I will be doing a public presentation on the Great Big Walk on June 5 at 7:30 pm in room PE 2001 at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Entrance is free but we’ll be collecting donations to fund an upgrade to the latest expedition communications gear.
