Some sights from around Lisbon-how many can you recognize?I enjoyed a lovely lap on the North Head Trail today-it had been too long!I enjoyed both attending and photographing a women’s chain saw workshop yesterday. It was sponsored by the Becoming an Outdoors Woman program. I brought a camera along and it was a challenging activity to capture as I had to avoid getting hit by falling trees, getting oily sawdust on my lens, and trying to capture faces in the midst of folks wearing fairly intensive PPE. I wanted to capture a mini story for each participant about their experience of using a chainsaw. Here’s one of the attendees in action.Proud of HKR 2545/3220 student performance yesterday. 3 degrees, wind to 60 km/h, & rain. We were out practicing their outdoor living & leadership skills & from the smiles-rocking it! Warm, dry, & comfortable in foul weather-that's adventurous learning at its finest! @memorialuniversity @memorialustudentsWe were driving home from teaching outside, looking forward to a hot dinner, and looked over at Long Pond. It was like glass and we both said, “Let’s go paddling.” The pond was three feet higher than yesterday and we shared its glassy surface with muskrats, ducks, and ducklings. A truly peaceful end to a lovely albeit cold and rainy day out. The sun may have even peaked out for a minute or two.TA’s Facebook Page

Et tu, Brute?
This is Brutus. Brutus probably weighs about 50 pounds with the rim in. Brutus is new to Signal Hill and is still getting broken in so that’s how it got its name. It’s a brut to pull up hill. I’ve … Continue reading

A Theory of Relativity
I pulled this tire up Signal Hill three times this morning. The first pull felt awfully hard. Indeed. Really, really hard. Interesting to note that that feeling of hardness made me really really want to stop. It was dark. Cold. … Continue reading

I am the Tow Truck
One morning when I was training for a climb, a guy in a truck roared up and said, “do you want me to call you a tow truck?” I wasn’t quick enough that morning mentally because about half way up … Continue reading

Antarctica Countdown 6 Days and Counting: Goldilocks Says I’m “Tire-d”
When your day starts with a view like this, even if you are dragging a 45 pound tire behind you, it’s going to be a good one. Natelle and I were out pre-sunrise on “The Hill” making sure I got … Continue reading

Antarctica Countdown 69 Days and Counting: “I am the Tow Truck”
I met Natelle and Bethany for a tire pulling session up Signal Hill this morning and I do always enjoy the comments from passing drivers and walkers. Standing at the bottom of Temperance Street, ready to begin, two guys in … Continue reading

Antarctica Countdown 76 Days and Counting: En”tire”ly Easier
What a difference a week makes…Today’s tire pull was entirely easier (forgive the pun). Instead of needing to stop for exploding calves, it was my max heart rate that called for pause. I can already see and feel progress of … Continue reading

Shakedown for the Summit
Happy Snow Day, Sitting here in my chair after an epic climb of Signal Hill to do some gear testing in today’s big blizzard. When I saw the forecast, “Snow at times heavy and blowing snow. Amount 20 cm. Wind … Continue reading

Learning from the Monster
The major learning of this week came in a much more intimate understanding of friction coefficients. You see, when you drag tire and its rim up Signal Hill, you are aware of every nuance of slope, snow, and ice. You … Continue reading
