Fun Fact of the Day

DID YOU KNOW?
One ocean that reaches the edge of Greenland is the Arctic Ocean and this is the smallest ocean in the world and the North Pole is near the middle of it!

Today’s Activity

Skiers and Climbers

This is a team tag game, the skiers move around as if they were skiing and climbers as if they were climbing (students may provide input on how the climbers move around).  Skiers and climbers try to tag each other, if tagged, a player changes teams.  The goal is to get everyone in the class to become all skiers or climbers.  It is a great cooperative game!

The Greenland shark is one of the largest sharks in the world and is the largest arctic fish

Today’s Activity

Louise Arner Boyd – An American explorer of Greenland and the Arctic

Today for Terrific Exploration Thursday we are going to learn a little about another explorer of Greenland, Louise Arner Boyd. In 1931-1938, Louise Arner Boyd lead a series of scientific  expeditions on both the east and north-east coasts of Greenland. In 1933, the American Geographical Society sent Louise and her team back to Greenland to study glaciers, fjords and seas nearby. She then later wrote a book about her 1933 expedition called The Fjord Region of East Greenland. Because of all her explorations in Greenland, an area that was near De Geer Glacier was named after her as Louise Boyd Land!
Louise became known all around the world for her explorations and was known in the newspapers as the “Arctic Diana” and “The Girl Who Tamed the Arctic”.  Another thing that Louise was greatly known for was being the first woman to fly over the North Pole privately in a DC-4 plane in 1955!

Today’s Activity

Ski and Climb Adventure Story

This is a great activity that is fun and different every time.  This activity has unlimited potential and possibilities and is completely up to the teacher.  Simply enough, the teacher tells a story as the students move around the classroom or gymnasium acting out all the actions in the story.  For this activity, we will have a ski and climbing theme.  With as much description as possible the teacher will take the students on an entire trip having the students pack their bags with essential items, ski uphill, downhill and across level fields, climb mountains, and climb back down, pull a sled, and set up camp.  This activity can get the students as active as the teacher sees fit and is a great way to teach them things like packing bags, dressing in layers, and setting up camp.

Terrific Explorations Thursday April 26

Fun Fact of the Day

DID YOU KNOW?
The brother and sister duo, Sarah and Eric McNair-Landry snow-kited across 2,414 km of Greenland!

Today’s Activity

Fridtjof Nansen – Explored Greenland in 1888

Today for Terrific Exploration Thursday we are going to learn a little about another historic explorer of Greenland, Fridtjof Nansen.  This Norwegian explorer led a team that made the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888. Nansen and his team were picked up from north-western Iceland and set sail for Greenland. Once they got to Greenland and started their crossing over inland ice, they struggled with many hidden crevasses in the glacier and the weather was usually bad which stop them from moving forward for days. Because of the time it was taking them to cross the ice, Nansen and his team decided to change to a shorter route across Greenland in order to get to the other side in time for their pick up. It took them 78 days in  total since they left their boat to get to Gofthaab. After getting there and finding out that no boat would be at Gofthaab until the following spring, Fridtjof and his team spent 7 months in Greenland hunting, fishing and learning from the locals.

Worldly Writing Wednesday April 25

Fun Fact of the Day

DID YOU KNOW?
Because of Greenland’s long winter nights and clear skies, it is one of the best places to see the northern lights!

Today’s Activity

Last Terrific Exploration Thursday (April 19th) we learnt about Eric the Red who was a Viking and renamed the new land he settled in “Greenland”. If you were an explorer like Eric the Red and found a new land that no one had found before and were to name it after a colour, what would it be?  For today’s writing activity, describe your new found colour land and what things you would see there.  Use your imagination to describe, in detail, your new found land.

Totally Artistic Tuesday April 24

Fun Fact of the Day

DID YOU KNOW?
Polar Bears are the biggest predator in Greenland

Today’s Activity

There are many animals that have adapted to the arctic climate in Greenland, some live on the land and others in the waters that surround Greenland. Land animals live on the arctic tundra which is a different type of environment that we are use to here in Newfoundland and Labrador. In the arctic tundra tree growth is hindered because of the cold temperatures and also contains bare areas because the ground is frozen for much of the year. Some of the animals that live on the tundra are polar bears, musk oxen, arctic fox, reindeer and different types of birds. In the waters surrounding Greenland, there are many different types of whales and seals! For today’s Totally Artistic Tuesday, draw a picture of the all the animals that habitat Greenland with both animals from the arctic tundra and arctic waters.

If you click the links below you will be sent to some websites with a list of animals that live on and around Greenland along with some information about them.
